DIY synth repair – fixing a series of dead keys
Saturday, June 19th, 2010My Yamaha CS2X has a bunch of keys that suddenly went dead
Here is a video I did that shows you how to fix a Yamaha synth that has a series of dead keys, in this case 4 of the 5 F#’s and G’s were dead. When keys die all at the same time in a series or pattern, as opposed to keys that go dead one at a time randomly, the culprit is often the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard assembly to the circuit board that drives the synth engine. Open the keyboard and check that each end of the ribbon cable is seated firmly in the connector. Sometimes it’s helpful to blast the connections with a dust remover or vacuum. In this case I was lucky enough to have this repair work and save me some money. Here’s the video, hope it’s useful, I haven’t seen much on synth repair out there.
Even though I did this repair on a Yamaha synth, you’ll find the basic principles are true on most electronic keyboards, so you can check for this fix on Korg, Roland or whichever synth you own.
